Heather Grant

Contributing Writer

Heather Grant is a freelance journalist based in Brisbane, Australia. She's spent the best part of the last 20 years juggling writing deadlines and kids, and introducing visitors from around the world to her adopted hometown.

As a newspaper reporter, Heather specialized in politics and health. Her interest in health carried through as a freelancer. She's regularly written for Australian national magazines like Good Health and Medicine, Family Circle, and Australian Parents.

But there's no pigeonholing this writer. She loves nothing more than to draw a story out of a person or a place, and so has been a regular contributor for many years with Australian Country Style and Notebook magazines. Getting the story has its moments -- like overcoming a fear of speed to sit next to V8 Supercar champion Craig Lowndes while he practised, at a mere 250 km per hour! Sipping tea with 80s pop star Boy George was a piece of cake in comparison.

Heather also loves Australian history. A member of the Queensland Women's Historical Association, she's doing her bit to ensure more is known of the places and faces behind her homeland's heritage. Her first book, Great Queensland Women, was published in 2005 to mark the centenary of women in that Australian state gaining the right to vote. It highlighted some inspirational women who deserve to be household names. Another coffee-table book, a local Brisbane history, was published in May 2010.

Heather began writing for Suite 101 in January 2010 and received her first Editor's Choice Award one month later for an environmental article on new ways to control the scourge of Australia, cane toads.
